Thinking of heading to Wales this year? Well, you’ve come to the right place. As someone who has lived in Wales all my life and explored most parts, I can give you some top tips to make planning a trip to Wales nice and easy.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

This depends entirely on what you’re looking for.

The best time to visit Wales for the weather is June, July and August. These are the warmest months and have the most daylight hours so you can do more activities in a day. However, they are also the busiest months, especially from Mid-July until the end of August when school holidays begin.

If you want to avoid the crowds but still experience moderately good weather, the best months to visit are April, May, June, and September.

Between October and March is not a great time to visit Wales as the weather is at its worst and some tourist attractions close for the winter.

However, you can still have a great time during Winter. There are lots of festive celebrations and many all-weather activities from museums to underground caving experiences.

How Long Should I Spend in Wales?

How long is a piece of string? You could spend a weekend in Wales and have a great time or you could spend an entire month there and still find new things to do each day.

If you're planning a vacation to Wales, I recommend at least 5 to 7 days so that you can enjoy the diversity of coastlines, national parks, and built-up areas.

Rather than trying to see the whole country, stick to visiting one region at a time. Either North Wales, South Wales, West Wales, or Mid-Wales.

Do I Need a Passport To Visit Wales?

Wales is part of the UK which does not have hard borders with the other members of the UK so you can move freely between them without immigration checks.

If you're visiting from another country within the UK (England, Scotland, or Northern Ireland), you don't need a passport to visit Wales. However, if you are flying via a domestic flight, most airlines require some form of identification.

If you're visiting from an international destination (i.e. flying into Cardiff airport), then you will need a passport, unless you are Irish (you can use a passport card) or a citizen of British Overseas Territories (ID cards are accepted).

Do I Need a Visa To Visit Wales?

Wales shares a visa and immigration system with the rest of the UK so the same rules apply to England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Most citizens of the UK, EU, USA, and many commonwealth countries do not need a visa to visit Wales for up to 6 months.

What is the Currency of Wales?

The currency of Wales is the British Pound (GBP), just like the rest of the United Kingdom. The symbol for this is £.

What Plugs Do They Use in Wales?

The plugs used in Wales are the standard 230 V 3-pin plugs, typically known as Type G. This is the same as the rest of the UK and Ireland. It is not the 2-pin Type C plug commonly used in the rest of Europe.

Is Wales Dog-Friendly?

Yes, being a destination where most of the major activities are outdoors, Wales is very dog-friendly.

There are a large number of dog-friendly hotels, although some will charge a surcharge. Many bars and restaurants found in rural areas will welcome dogs although this isn't always the case in the larger cities.

  • Anglesey
  • Snowdonia National Park

How To Get Around in Wales?

Whilst it is possible to get around Wales using public transport such as buses and trains, the routes often take considerably longer so I highly advise getting your own transport to travel around Wales such as a car, motorbike, or camper van.

If you are only visiting the cities, such as Cardiff and Swansea, then public transport is more reliable. However, a car is still recommended for exploring the surrounding countryside. Both cities have plenty of parking, even in the city centre, although it can be slightly expensive in Cardiff.

Can You Visit Wales From London?

Yes, it's possible to visit Wales from the capital. The best way is on a road trip, however, it's also possible using public transport or on an organised tour starting and ending in London.
