Let’s be honest, finding the perfect gift can be a pain in the backside, especially if your recipient is a fussy Welsh person like myself.

That’s why I’ve done all of the hard work for you and put together this epic guide with all of my favourite Welsh gift ideas from independent Welsh businesses that are perfect for any celebration.

1. Welsh Whiskey Giftset

Whisky distilling was reintroduced in Wales in the 2000s thanks to the Welsh Whiskey Company, now known as Penderyn. Their main distillery is located in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park and their products are now sold all over the globe, putting Wales on the map as a Whiskey producer.

Their flagship whiskey isn’t too expensive but tastes amazing which is why it makes a great gift. You can buy it in individual bottles, as a tasting set of miniature bottles, or even a gift set that comes with Penderyn-branded whiskey glasses.

If your recipient is a real whisky connoisseur, you can treat them to one of Penderyns special edition whiskeys which are always changing, although these will set you back a little more.

Penderyn is no longer the sole Whiskey distillery in Wales, others include Aber Falls, Anglesey Môn, and In the Welsh Wind.

2. Welsh Cheese Hamper

The mountainous landscapes in Wales are much better suited for cows to graze on rather than growing crops. This is why there is such a strong dairy industry in Wales and more than 100 different Welsh cheeses to choose from.

These make a grate gift for cheese lovers (pun intended). One of the largest Welsh cheese brands is the Snowdonia Cheese Company who have a range of giftworthy items including hampers, giftsets, and even cheese and wine pairings.

3. Zip World Experience

For adventurous souls, a Zip World experience offers an unforgettable thrill. Zip World is best known for Velocity 2, the world’s fastest zip line which runs through a disused quarry in Eryri (Snowdonia).

However, Zip World operate 4 sites across Wales (3 in North Wales and 1 in South Wales), all with different activities so you can choose something that’s most suited to your recipient.

Here are a few of the Zip World experiences you can gift:

  • Zip Lining – Choose from the iconic Velocity 2 (fastest in the world), Phoenix (fastest seated zip line),  Titan 2 (four-person zip lining), or a Zip Safari with lots of mini zip lines.
  • Fforest Coaster – An alpine roller coaster that twists and turns through the woodlands like a toboggan.
  • Bounce Below – An underground trampoline park in an old cavern. Suitable for adults and children.
  • Treetop Nets – An obstacle course suspended in the trees that’s ideal for little ones.
  • Quarry Karts – Race through an old quarry on miniature go-karts powered by gravity.

4. Welsh Wall Art and Prints

Share the beauty of Wales with prints from iconic locations across the country that can transform any home.

My favourite prints are from Typelab which is run by the independent graphic designer Natalie Thomas who lives in North Wales. She has beautifully designed prints from all across Wales with stunning landscapes and historic landmarks.

You can search for your recipient's favourite place with a huge range from Portmeirion to Barry Island. Prints can be anything from standard photo size up to 13x19” which is the size of a small poster. Note that there are no frames included so you’ll need to purchase these separately.

5. Love Spoons

Most of us Welshies are familiar with Love Spoons, but for those who haven’t heard of them before, a Love Spoon is a traditional carved wooden spoon symbolizing love and affection.

They are often given as a romantic gift for St Dwynwen’s Day or Valentine's Day. But they can be given year-round and are also popular wedding gifts.

Traditionally, you should carve a love spoon yourself as a way of demonstrating your skills to your love interest (if you want to try it, this book will teach you how), however, today it’s more common to purchase a premade love spoon.

If you want to support Welsh businesses, make sure to find one that’s made in Wales as some are now imported. I recommend Richard Downes who is a Swansea-based carver. As they are intricately designed and hand carved, they are a little more expensive than cheap factory-made brands but it will be a much more meaningful gift.

You can find his love spoons in many Welsh gift shops or you can buy them online using the below link.

6. Welsh Afternoon Tea Hamper

Indulge someone with a taste of Wales through an afternoon tea hamper from Daffodil Foods, based in Pwllheli in North Wales.

Their hamper contains scones, cream, Bara Brith, tea, coffee, biscuits, and more. All made in Wales, of course. The hamper is ideal for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or special occasions such as a housewarming gift.

Plus, it comes in a beautifully presented gift box that can be hand delivered or easily mailed directly to your lucky recipient with a personalised message.

7. Welsh Wool Textiles and Clothing

When you think of Wales, most people think about sheep and with three times as many sheep as people, there’s no surprise that the wool industry has historically been one of the most important.

Although not as fundamental today, the high quality of Welsh wool means that blankets, scarves, or clothing made from it make great gifts that are sure to last.

A great Welsh knitwear brand is Anibendod which is run by Anwen from Aberystwyth. She sells adorable fleeces, hats, and hoodies with Welsh language slogans on them.

If you’re looking for Welsh woollen blankets and cushions, I recommend checking out Sunset Ocean Designs which is run by Jessica from Swansea who has been selling Welsh gifts online since 2010.

8. Welsh Gin Giftset

A decade ago, there was only one company making gin in Wales which was Penderyn (their gin is now called Brecon Botanicals Gin), but fast forward to today and there are around 30 different gin distilleries of all sizes.

Some of the best Welsh gin brands to gift are Dà Mhìle, Aber Falls, and Cyget. However, many of these can be hard to find online so you’ll have to pop into a local store.

If you want to buy online, I recommend checking out Hensol who have a full-scale gin distillery set in a 17th-century Welsh castle.

Flavours include Welsh Dry Din, Blood Orange Zest, and Wild Strawberry & Hibiscus. You can also pick up a mini pack with all three flavours, although this isn’t always available as it’s very popular.

9. CONFIDENT? HYDERUS? Board Game

The original CONFIDENT? game was created by travel couple Natalie (from London) and Ceri (from Wales). Of course, with a Welshman on the team, it wasn’t long before a Wales edition was created.

CONFIDENT? HYDERUS? is the only bilingual board game in both Welsh and English which means the whole family can play along. It’s also great for Welsh learners looking for a fun way to pick up the language.

The game contains questions about Wales and the world such as ‘How old was the oldest ever Welsh person?’ or ‘How many sheets are in a roll of toilet paper?’. Instead of giving a specific answer, you give a range of answers making it easier to guess correctly. But, the smaller your range, the more points you score.

The board game is suitable for players aged 10+ and can be enjoyed by groups of anywhere between 2 and 30 players.

10. Star Gazing Experience for Two

Whether you are looking for a romantic gift for a partner or a gift for couples, this enchanting star-gazing experience is perfect for anyone obsessed with the stars.

Your recipient will head up to the Bannau Brcheinion (Brecon Beacons) Observatory, known for its clear skies and minimal light pollution thanks to being an official Dark Sky Reserve.

A knowledgeable astronomer will lead you on a journey through the constellations, planets, and celestial wonders that grace the Welsh night sky. With the aid of the observatory and portable telescopes, they’ll have the chance to observe distant galaxies, sparkling stars, and maybe even a meteor shower.

Simply purchase the experience voucher and your recipient can book a date that works for them in the coming 12 months. Keep in mind that this is a group activity, so they may be in a group of up to 40 people.

11. Welsh Rugby Merch

If your recipient is a big Welsh rugby fan, then you can’t go wrong with some official Welsh rugby merch from the WRU. The latest kit will always go down well during the Six Nations or Rugby World Cup, but they also have hats, scarves, and other accessories with the Welsh national team branding.

I recommend buying from local sports shops on your high street. But, if you’d rather buy online, the best place to find a full range of Welsh rugby merch including home and away kits for men and women, training kits, jackets, accessories, and even rugby balls is Lovell Rugby.

12. Monopoly: Cardiff Edition

Now family squabbles at Christmas can have a Welsh twist thanks to Monopoly Cardiff Edition, a fun novelty Welsh gift that will actually get used.

The concept of the game is the same as the age-old classic, buy properties, build houses, and trade your way to victory.

However, this edition features all of the iconic Welsh landmarks in Cardiff such as the Wales Millenium Centre, the Principality Stadium, and Cardiff Castle. You can take over Cardiff Blues or the South Wales Echo and own Roath Park or St Fagans Museum.

13. Candles Made in Wales

Light up someone's life with the warm glow and inviting scents of candles made in Wales.

The Original Welsh Candle Company was created by two self-proclaimed candle addicts in Cowbridge, South Wales. All of the candles are made locally and hand-poured in small batches.

They have created different scents such as CWTCH (rich, warm and cosy scent) and CARIAD (soft earthiness of cypress and cedar) which can be purchased individually or as gift sets. They come in a small tin with a cute message on the side.

They have 40 hours burn time, but once finished, your recipient can purchase a refill rather than throwing the tin away.

14. Overnight Stay at a Welsh Castle

Wales is known as the castle capital of the world with more castles per square mile than any other country. Now, thanks to this experience voucher, you can gift the opportunity to stay in the historic Ruthin Castle in North Wales which has been turned into a 4-star hotel and spa.

The experience includes a one night stay for two people at the castle with a full Welsh breakfast in the morning.

After purchasing the experience, send it to your recipient and they can book it at a time to suit them. Note that the stay cannot be on a Saturday night and cannot be booked during August.
