In 2009, parts of Pembrokeshire in West Wales were used as a filming location for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One, including the location of Shell Cottage - but, can you still visit?
If you’re a Potter-head, like myself, and hoping to visit the location where Shell Cottage was filmed, let me tell you upfront that it's not possible. Shell Cottage was only erected for filming and immediately taken down.
However, there is still another iconic location at Freshwater West Beach that you might want to visit; the grave of Dobby the House Elf.
Keep reading to find out more about where Shell Cottage was built and another nearby shell cottage.
What is Shell Cottage?
Shell Cottage is the home of Ron’s older brother, Bill Weasley, and his newlywed wife, Fleur Delacour.
In the books, Shell Cottage is described as a ‘lonely and beautiful place’ just outside Tinworth in Cornwall, an area popular with wizarding families who want to live among Muggles.
Scenes in the movie that were filmed at Shell Cottage include:
- Ron goes to stay Bill and Fleurs house, just after deserting Harry and Hermione as they hunt for Horcruxes.
ㅤ - When Harry, Ron, and Hermione convince Griphook the elf to help them break into Gringotts.
ㅤ - When Dobby helps Harry, Ron, Hermione, and their friends to escape Malfoy Manor, they arrive on the beach outside Shell Cottage, but Dobby is killed in the process.
ㅤ - Dobby’s burial is on the beach near Shell Cottage.
Where Was Shell Cottage Filmed?
Although Shell Cottage was set in Cornwall, the filming location for Shell Cottage when it appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was on Freshwater West Beach in West Wales.
The scenes were filmed during May and June 2009. You can see some photos of the set being built here.
Unfortunately, Shell Cottage is not there in 2024. It was a temporary building that was only constructed for the filming of Harry Potter in 2009. It was immediately taken down and has never been open for tourists.
A Different Shell Cottage?
Some people get confused because Shell Cottage is also a nickname for the Cilwendeg Shell House Hermitage which is another attraction to visit in West Wales.
This is a cottage that was built on the grounds of the Cilwendeg estate in Pembrokeshire. It is iconic because the inside is decorated from head to toe using shells from the nearby coastline.
The Cilwendeg Shell House Hermitage was built by Morgan Jones who inherited the estate in the early 19th century. It was built in honour of his uncle from whom he inherited it.
Visiting Dobby’s Grave at Freshwater West
If you are a Harry Potter fan visiting Freshwater West, then you can still visit Dobby’s Grave.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One, Dobby the House Elf died while helping Harry and his friends escape from Malfoy Manor to Shell Cottage. He was then buried on the beach.
Today, there is a shrine to Dobby at the back of the beach in the same location as his grave was in the movie.
In the past, fans have left socks and pebbles in memory of their favourite house elf, however, due to environmental concerns, the local council have now asked that you do not leave items here.
