How To Visit Dobby’s Grave [Is It Still There in 2024?]

Freshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire is undeniably one of the most beautiful beaches in West Wales, popular with surfers, dog walkers, and…. ummm Harry Potter fans?

That’s because it was a filming location used during the final two Harry Potter films. Today, it’s home to a very special shrine to a very special house elf.

In this guide, I’ll explain exactly how to find Dobby’s grave and what to expect when you get there.

Is Dobby's Grave Still There in 2024?

Yes, Dobby’s grave is still at Freshwater West beach in 2024.

National Trust, who manage Freshwater West, have been attempting to move it to a more suitable place for years now (source: BBC). However, after consultations and backlash from fans at the concept, they have decided to keep the memorial to Dobby the House Elf on the beach.

That being said, they have urged the public not to leave items like socks or painted stones at the site as this can put local wildlife at risk. Even the paint chips from painted rocks can enter the food chain and cause damage (source: BBC). Please respect these rules.

What is Dobby’s Grave?

Dobby’s grave is a shrine to the much-loved character from the Harry Potter franchise, Dobby the house elf.

The shrine can be found at Freshwater West which is the beach in Pembrokeshire where his death was filmed and where Harry, Ron, and Hermione buried him.

Today, the location where this scene was filmed has become a pilgrimage for Harry Potter fans who have left pebbles, socks, and other memorials to their favourite house elf. I even featured it among my top things to do in West Wales.

Where is Dobby’s Grave?

Dobby’s Grave can be found at Freshwater West Beach, this was a filming location used in the Harry Potter franchise as the location of Shell Cottage and is the beach where dobby’s death and burial were filmed.

Freshwater West is a large sandy beach that’s popular with families and surfers. It is managed by National Trust and facilities include toilets, food trucks, and a lifeguard during peak season.

How to find it:

There are two car parks at Freshwater West, both of which are free of charge. Begin in the main car park which is the one with the food trucks and toilets.

Head down onto the beach and head right, this will take you past the lifeguard hut.

After around 300m, look to the rear of the beach and you should see Dobby’s grave in the dunes. It has become quite big in recent years so you should see the pebbles or a small cross from the beach.

There is usually a crowd of people which is also a big giveaway to its location. If you are still in any doubt, I have dropped a Google Maps pin here, or you can see the map I’ve put together below.

Why Do People Leave Socks at Dobby’s Grave?

People leave socks at Dobby’s Grave because that’s how Harry helped free Dobby in the books and movies. When a master gives a house elf an item of clothing, they are freed. Harry tricked Lucius Malfoy into giving Dobby a sock in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Can You Visit Shell Cottage?

Shell Cottage was the home of Bill and Fleur Weasley, which featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2. It was also filmed at Freshwater West beach, so, can you still see it?

No, you cannot visit Shell Cottage from Harry Potter. This was erected on Freshwater West beach specifically for the film shoots, however, it was then dismantled immediately afterwards.

Don't confuse Shell Cottage with the Cilwendeg Shell House which is another attraction in Pembrokeshire, an old grotto decorated entirely with shells from the local area.

Who is Dobby?

Avid Harry Potter fans will need no introduction to Dobby. But for the muggles who need a recap, Dobby was a house elf who first appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when he warned Harry Potter of a plot to open the Chamber of Secrets.

At this time, he served the Malfoy family who treated him badly, but Harry manages to trick Lucius Malfoy into handing him a sock, thus freeing him (when a house elf receives an item of clothing from their master, they are released from service). This is why people leave socks at the shrine.

Dobby becomes good friends with Harry and helps him throughout the franchise.

Dobby’s final appearance in the film francise is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 when he helps Harry, Ron, and Hermione to escape the Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange. Unfortunately, Bellatrix threw a knife at Dobby and he died during their escape.
