Swansea is a great place to stay in Wales as it has many outstanding cultural, natural, and modern attractions that will entertain and enlighten you. Due to it being a metropolitan centre and a stone's throw away from one of the most glorious areas of outstanding beauty in the UK, Swansea suits everyone, no matter what type of break you're looking for.
To get the most out of your stay in Swansea or the Gower Peninsula to its east, it's crucial to stay in areas that match your needs and expectations. Here are some of the best areas to call home for a few nights.
1. Maritime Quarter
When I'm staying in Swansea, I prefer to avoid the city centre itself and stay over in the Maritime Quarter instead. This is a former industrial area that's been regenerated into a modern residential and leisure district.
It's far more appealing than the city centre with it's Victorian-styled, red brick houses and apartments that give it a peaceful charm. But it's still within walking distance so you can walk from the Maritime Quarter to the Quadrant Shopping Centre in the middle of the city within 10 minutes.
That being said, you don't really need to go into the city centre at all, many of the main things to do in Swansea are in the Maritime Quarter or close by, such as the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea Museum, and the promenade along Swansea Bay.
If you want to check out some trendy restaurants and bars, stay near Tawe Basin. This area is surrounded by great places to enjoy yourself, with El Pescador, a Spanish-inspired dining experience, being a fantastic location we highly recommend.
Where To Stay in the Maritime Quarter
Delta by Marriot Swansea (££) - This modern hotel in the Maritime Quarter offers panoramic views across the marina and sea. It's clean and modern with excellent service, meeting rooms, an onsite restaurant, and also a free car park if you're driving.
The Music Fable Hotel (£££) - Swansea's five-star boutique hotel is located just north of the Maritime Quarter (technically in Sandfields) where the elegant Victorian-style rooms are modelled after famous musicians. You'll even be greeted with a glass of bubbly.
Morgans Hotel (££) - Set within a grade-II listed building, the hotel has kept its original charm but the rooms have been individually decorated in a contemporary style.
2. Uplands
Uplands is a suburb of Swansea about 2 miles east of the city centre. This is an up-and-coming area with a reputation for being a hip and quirky place to stay, it's also much cheaper than the city centre and the Maritime Quarter.
When staying in Uplands, you'll be among the bohemian underbelly of the city, as various venues attract music lovers and crowds from a more creative scene. If you want to get in on the nightlife, I can recommend starting out at Uplands Tavern which is a popular pub for food and has regular live music and quiz nights.
There aren't any huge hotels in Uplands. Whilst there are a few boutique hotels and small guest houses (see my top picks below), most people staying here will opt for an apartment or AirBnB as they are in plentiful supply.
Just be aware that a lot of the area around Uplands is very hilly and can be tough to walk around all day. There are regular buses from Uplands to the city centre which take less than 10 minutes.
Where To Stay in Uplands
The Mirador Boutique Town House (££) - A charming and elegant place to stay. Each room has its own theme such as Roman and Egyptian. Furnished with classy touches like drapes and chandeliers.
Wynberg House B&B (£) - An affordable and comfortable 3-star B&B in a quiet area of Uplands. Feels cosy and homely with excellent hosts, plus access to the terrace and picnic area.
3. Mumbles
Mumbles is the district at the far end of Swansea Bay which you can see from Swansea Beach thanks to the iconic lighthouse. It's one of my favourite spots to enjoy a sunset in Swansea.
It's a quiet area filled with Victorian townhouses with steep roofs, making it look like it's been lost in time and it's been named among Wales's best places to live.
Mumbles is best known for the iconic Oystermouth Castle but it also has some lesser-known quirky attractions like the Lovespoon Gallery. It's also a haven of quaint pubs and bars so you can still enjoy food and drink in the evening without going too far, there's even the 'Mumble Mile' pub crawl.
When you do want to explore further afield, getting between Mumbles and the city centre is relatively easy thanks to a regular direct bus from the city centre bus station to Oystermouth station in Mumbles, this takes around 25 minutes. Check Traveline Cymru for the latest departure times and prices.
Where To Stay in Mumbles
Oyster House (££) - A 4-star boutique hotel with a restaurant and terrace and coastal views across Swansea Bay.
Norton House Hotel (£) - Slightly more inland, the Norton is a comfortable hotel in a former Georgian manor. The rooms are designed with a modern touch and all guests get a free Welsh breakfast.
4. Penmaen
Penmaen is a small village tucked under the slopes of Cefn Bryn, the hill that dominates the centre of the famous Gower Peninsula. It's a rural feeling village, surrounded by lush green spaces, and a stay here is sure to be relaxing and reconnect you with nature.
Due to its central location on the peninsular, Penmaen gives you excellent access to explore the rest of The Gower and makes the perfect hub for day trips and excursions.
It's one of the best places to stay on the Gower for those who enjoy a hike, as there will be a different trail for you to clamber down each day. The best hike from here is up The Great Tor, it only takes around 20 minutes from the centre of Penmaen and is one of the Gower's best sunset spots.
Although Penmaen seems further down the Gower Peninsular than Mumbles, it still only takes around 30 minutes to reach on public transport with direct buses running through the day. Having said that, you will definitely need a vehicle to get around the area, especially as most accommodation is away from the main village.
Just be aware that when you stay in Penmaen, you'll need to be more self-sufficient than most. As a small village, there are only a few restaurants or bars to visit for lunch or dinner, and you'll have to venture out a bit further to neighbouring villages.
Where To Stay in Penmaen
Parc-Le-Broes (£££) - Located just outside Penmaen, Parc-Le-Bores is a luxurious 4-star hotel in a former Victorian hunting lodge surrounded by woodland.
5. Oxwich
Oxwich is a pretty, quaint village of about 200 permanent inhabitants, but despite its small size, it is a mighty good place to stay. This is because it boasts beautiful thatched cottages that are equally charming and cosy and offers lovely views and sites to explore.
When staying in Oxwich, the main attraction is the fabulous Oxwich Bay, a picturesque sandy beach that stretches for miles across the coastline. You also have the option of checking out not one, but two, castles local to the area, and there's also a great National Nature Reserve on the doorstep of the village.
Keep in mind that the small town can get pretty busy, as all the traffic heading to Oxwich Bay passes through the settlement, quickly eliminating any illusions of tranquillity. There is public transport running here, however, you'll usually need to make a change so it's best to stay here when travelling by car or van.
Where To Stay in Oxwich
Oxwich Bay Hotel (£££) - Located right on the luscious bay, the hotel offers sea view rooms, garden pods and cottage rooms with breakfast, offering a stay to suit every type of traveller.
6. Llangenith
If you want to explore the southernmost parts of the Gower peninsular, then staying in or around Llangenith might be a good idea. This is great if you enjoy coastal walks or want to try coasteering which is popular around here.
When you are this down the peninsular be prepared for rural life. Llangentih is a small village with a church, a pub, and a few houses. There is one excellent Inn you can stay at, however, most people choose to stay in self-catered cottages as there aren't many places to eat nearby.
From Llangenith, it's a 20-minute drive to Rhosili where you'll find the iconic Worm's Head land bridge, or you can walk there along the coastal path in about 1hr20. You're also close to several great beaches, some good surf spots, and the famous Broughton Bay Blue Pool.
Where To Stay in Llangenith
The King's Head Inn - This 4-star country inn housed in a converted 17th-century building is one of the few places to stay in Llangenith. It has contemporary rooms with underfloor heating and an on-site restaurant.
