Golf resorts are not a new thing in Wales. They are where you’ll find some of Wales’ most prestigious golf courses along with spas, fitness centres, restaurants, and more.

As a Welshman myself, I have already stayed at several of them. So, in this guide, I’ll share all of the top golf resorts and golf hotels in Wales along with a brief review of the course and hotel facilities to help you determine which is best for you.

All of the top golf resorts in Wales are in South or West Wales. However, at the end of this article, I have also included a few hotels in North Wales near golf courses too.

If golfing is the most important part of your stay, then Celtic Manor is by far the best golf resort in Wales. It’s the only resort on this list that has three courses to choose from, their original Roman Road course (par 70), The Montgomerie (par 69), and their newer Twenty Ten course (par 71) which is where the Ryder Cup was played.

They also have a floodlit driving range, an indoor putting studio, and they offer lessons too.

As you’d expect, the best courses also come with a higher price. Green fees for the first two courses are between £40-60 whereas the fee for the Twenty Ten course is at least £120 per person. The Twenty Ten course is also a bit of a drive from the resort itself but has excellent facilities and its own clubhouse.

The hotel itself is a 4-star hotel with included access to the spa and leisure facilities so after a hard day out on the course, you can grab a robe and slippers and hit their jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, and plunge pools. They also have a huge 20m swimming pool which lies underneath a simulated sky which also twinkles at night like the stars.

Although the hotel can feel a little dated, the rooms are large, comfy, and always very clean. The staff are helpful and the concierge service is very helpful for organizing golf or other activities in the local area.

The price of rooms is quite reasonable, costing anywhere between £185-£300 per night depending upon the time of year.

2. The Vale Resort

The Vale is a resort in South Wales that’s home to a golf course, spa, and four-star hotel.

The Vale has hosted PGA and European golf championships so you know they mean business. Onsite, there’s not one, but two 18-hole championship golf courses to keep you busy. This includes the Wales National Course (par 73) and the Lake Course (par 72).

Other golfing facilities include a 16-bay driving range, practice putting greens, short game practice area and they offer lessons with the option of tuition or on-course coaching.

Aside from the golf course, they also have excellent spa facilities. Their health club has a 20m indoor swimming pool which is among the biggest of all the hotels in Wales. It also has a sauna, steam room, and whirlpool jacuzzi.

Hotel guests get complimentary access to the spa facilities as well as the gym with over 80 machines, squash courts, and tennis courts. You’ll still need to pay the green fee for the golf courses which range between £35-£50 depending upon the tee time.

The cost of a room here is typically between £130-£200 per night based on a double room, although I’ve seen prices as low as £120 when staying out of season or on a weekday.

3. Delta Hotels St. Pierre Country Club

Nestled in the serene Chepstow countryside, St. Pierre Country Club (part of Delta Hotels by Marriott) is a haven for both avid golfers and wellness enthusiasts.

The hotel itself is in a 14th-century manor house fronted by an avenue lined with trees and beautifully manicured gardens. You can opt for a lake view or golf course view from your room and add a balcony too. The décor of the rooms could do with a refresh as they do feel a bit dated.

The St. Pierre Country Club has two 18-hole golf courses (par 72 and 68) set around the large lake which are some of the best in South Wales. The green fee is a flat rate of £30 per person, there is no discount for hotel residents.

They also have a 12-bay driving range, putting green, chipping greens and bunker area to get some practice in before your game.

Other facilities at the hotel include a fitness club with a gym and a large swimming pool, a spa, a tennis court, and the Cast Iron Bar & Grill serving up excellent British food albeit a little pricey. They do also have an included breakfast buffet which has a huge range of options and is very generous.

4. Bryn Meadows

Bryn Meadows is a four-star golf hotel and spa in South Wales about 10 minutes north of Caerphilly and 30 minutes south of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park by car. This makes it a great location for exploring the region with a mixture of towns, cities, and beautiful countryside within easy reach.

The resort is family-run and with just 42 rooms, it’s much smaller than the others I’ve shared which translates into a more personal service.

They have their own 18-hole championship golf course (par 71) as well as a smaller 9-hole academy course and a golf simulator. There are buggies for hire to get around the course and they have lessons you can book too. The charge for teeing off on the championship course is between £25-£30 which is similar to the others.

Bryn Meadows is also featured in my guide to the best spa hotels in Wales with facilities including a large indoor pool (not heated), jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and aromatherapy suite. Full use of the spa and gym access is included for guests.

There are two onsite restaurants. The Winner’s Club is a bar and restaurant that overlooks the 10th and 11th holes serving up pub grub and good banter. Alternatively, Blas is a slightly more expensive restaurant in the hotel with great views across the valley. I have not eaten here personally, but the reviews are mixed with some calling it underwhelming.

5. The Cliff Hotel & Spa

If you enjoy a game of golf every now and again but having a nice hotel by the sea is more important than Champsionship-level golf courses, then The Cliff Hotel & Spa might be for you.

This is a 3-star hotel near Cardigan on the west coast of Wales. It boasts large modern rooms and you can opt for a sea view room to enjoy the picturesque scenery across Cardigan Bay. Many of the rooms have private balconies and, if you book the suite, you can also enjoy your own private hot tub.

The price of a standard double room is between £110-£240 per night depending upon the day and time of year. At the lower end, this is a good price for the level of luxury.

The Cliff has its own 9-hole golf course (par 29) plus Cardigan Golf Course is less than 10 minutes walk away where you’ll find another 18-hole course (par 72).

If you’re staying at the hotel, green fees for the onsite course are discounted to £8 all day every day (usually between £9-£11). The standard fee for the Cardigan course is £38.

As a hotel guest, you’ll also get 1 hour of complimentary access to the spa each day which has a sauna, steam room, and a small pool with a sparkling roof which makes you feel like you’re under the stars.

6. Penrhos Park

There aren’t any golf resorts in North Wales, the closest you’ll get is Penrhos Park, located just outside Aberystwyth in Mid-Wales. The location is great for visiting coastal towns and villages such as Aberystwyth and the Wales Coastal Path is within easy reach, although there is limited public transport so you’ll need a car.

The above booking link will take you to their hotel which is very small with just 15 rooms. However, they also have self--catered lodges and caravans which you can book through Hoseasons instead.

The hotel rooms are above average size and most have a kitchenette which is helpful for making drinks and light snacks. They also have an onsite restaurant serving breakfast and dinner at a reasonable price.

Penrhos Park has two golf courses to choose from, the 18-hole Championship Course or the 9-hole Red Kite Course which is more beginner friendly.

If you’re staying at the park, you’ll get a discounted rate to play on the Championship course which will be £30-£40. The smaller course is just £7 per adult whether you’re a guest or not.

The cost of staying at the hotel is very reasonable, typically between £100-£130 for a double room.

This also includes access to their gym, pool, tennis courts, and spa facilities. There’s a jacuzzi in the pool area, however, it’s coin-operated at £1 per 9 minutes.

Looking for a golf resort in North Wales?

Unfortunately, the golf resorts in Wales aren’t very spread out across the country, with all of them being in South or West Wales and none in the north.

That being said, if you still fancy a golf holiday in North Wales, here are a few hotels that are located near golf courses:

1. The Quay Hotel & Spa

The Quay (1)

The Quay Hotel & Spa is a 4-star hotel in an excellent location in Deganwy, North Wales, with two epic golf courses accessible in under 10 minutes by car.

Over in Conwy is the Conwy Golf Course which is a Par 72 Championship links course in a stunning coastal location with an excellent clubhouse. Meanwhile, near Llandudno, you’ll find the Maesdu course which is an 18-hole Championship Course with a blend of parkland and links.

The Quay Hotel itself has a swimming pool, spa pool, sauna and steam room, as well as two reputed restaurants. I recommend opting for a sea view room to enjoy stunning views over the Conwy estuary through floor-to-ceiling windows.

2. Trefeddian Hotel

Trefeddian Hotel is a 4-star hotel near the beach of Aberdyfi, a small seaside town straddling the border of Mid-Wales and North Wales.

Right on your doorstep is Aberdovey Golf Course, another well-established Championship links course that’s ranked among the best courses in Wales. Being right next to the beach means that the elements offer another challenge to test your skills.

The hotel itself has exceptional facilities and you can opt for a sea view room which looks right across the coast. It even has its own putting green along with an indoor pool, hot tub, a tennis court, and a beautiful sun terrace.

Bonus: Dormy at Royal St Davids

Royal St David’s is a prestigious golf course in Harlech, North Wales with a tough par 69 18-hole course that’s ranked among the best in the world. Although there is no ‘resort’ here as such, you can stay at the course in the dormy.

This small onsite accommodation has only 5 bedrooms available. Facilities are limited and there is no reception. However, rooms start at just £60 per night for a single or £100 for a double which is a bargain, plus, you get a discount on green fees at the golf course.

This can only be booked via email, full details here.
