Explore Caernarfon on a self-guided walking tour. You’ll walk around the royal town’s historic castle and well-preserved town walls as you learn about its rich history from being an important medieval stronghold up to its role in transporting slate from local quarries during the 19th century.

How Do AudioWalks Work? First download the Wales Guidebook: AudioWalks app for Apple or Android. From here, you can purchase the Caernarfon AudioWalk.

The tours are GPS-enabled. To start the tour, simply visit the start point, pop in your earphones and hit ‘Start Tour’. Your guide will give you full directions, but there’s also an onscreen map if you’d prefer to use that.

All of our tours are created and narrated by locals who are passionate about sharing their country with visitors.

The Caernarfon AudioWalk begins in Castle Square, also known as Y Maes.

On the tour, you’ll circle around the castle and town walls, before heading into the narrow streets of the historic town and ending back on Castle Square, or Y Maes.  You’ll visit the following landmarks:

  • The Old Slate Quay
  • The Old Customs House
  • The Town Walls
  • Victoria Dock
  • East Gate

Important Things To Know

You’ll need to download the Wales Guidebook app to access the tour. Remember to bring headphones so that you don’t annoy people around you and ensure you have adequate battery in your device.

The tour is only available in English right now. Please let us know if there are other languages you would like.

You can download the tour before you go if you’d like to save your mobile data. However, don’t press ‘Start Tour’ until you are at the start point.

Where does my tour begin?

The start location for each tour is included in the tour description. You can also see it using the onscreen map after purchasing the tour.

When does my tour start?

You can begin your AudioWalk whenever you like, that’s the beauty of a self-guided tour. It’s also possible to pause the tour if you want to explore the area around you.

Can I use my tour on more than one device?

No, once you have activated a tour on your device, it can only be used on this device. However, we do encourage you to share the tour with friends and family. You can do this by sharing a pair of headphones or taking the tour using your phone's speaker (ensuring not to disturb others around you).

Is the tour suitable for dogs?

Yes, everywhere we visit on the Caernarfon AudioWalk is dog-friendly.

Is the tour suitable for wheelchairs or prams?

Yes, the Caernarfon AudioWalk follows an accessible route that’s suitable for prams and pushchairs.

Is the tour suitable for rainy days?

No, we wouldn’t advise you take the tour on a rainy day as it’s an entirely outdoor tour. You can always pause the tour and complete it later or on another day if the weather takes a turn for the worse.
